or from locally enlarged lymph nodes. Most preparations showed a chronic granulomatous reaction consisting of lymphocytes, histiocytes, and epithelioid cells as well as either Langhans's or foreignbody type giant cells, or both. The degree of granuloma formation and giant cell infiltration varied. In only one case did the reactions consist merely of chronic lymphocytic and histiocytic inflammation with no granuloma formation. Examination of melanoma nodules injected with MER showed, in addition to granulomas, large numbers of giant cells penetrating the tumour.

Granuloma formation in patients after injection of methanol extraction residue (MER-GCG).

Nine patients with advanced cancer who were receiving the methanol extraction residue of BCG (MER-BCG) intradermally or intratumorally underwent biopsies from the injected sites or from locally enlarged lymph nodes. Most preparations showed a chronic granulomatous reaction consisting of lymphocytes, histiocytes, and epithelioid cells as well as either Langhans's or foreignbody type giant cells,...

Effects of BCG, Corynebacterium parvum, and methanol-extration residue in the reduction of mortality from Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans infections in immunosuppressed mice.

An immunosuppressed mouse model was devised to test the effects of immunopotentiators on the prevention of bacterial and fungal infections. The effects of BCG and Corynebacterium were tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans infection. The effect of methanol-extraction residue (MER-BCG) was tested against S. aureus septicemia. CDF mice were given various doses of BCG, 1.0 mg of...

Effects of methanol extraction residue and therapeutic irradiation against established isografts and simulated local recurrence of mammary carcinomas.

Female BALB/c mice carrying established isografts or simulated local recurrence implants of 2 rapidly growing mammary adenocarcinomas were treated either by injection of the methanol extraction residue (MER) fraction of killed Bacillus Calmette-Guérin organisms (given s.c. or into the tumor) or by focal X-irradiation or by both. None of the modalities of therapy effected cures, but in many inst...

Immunoprophylaxis of Methylcholanthrene-induced Tumors in Mice with Bacillus Calmette-Guérinand Methanol-extracted Residue *

The immunoprophylactic effects of i.p. administration of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and methanol-extracted residue of BCG (MER) on the production of tumors by 3-methylcholanthrene (MCA) in C57BL/6 mice were investigated. At the dose level of MCA used (500 /ug i.m.), almost all mice developed tumors. Pretreatment of the mice with BCG either 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after carcinogen adminis...
